Can I change the share name used by my dog's GPS device on Tracker Live?

Quick answer:

It is not possible to edit the share name used by the GPS device (not possible even by Tracker support), but if necessary, you can unregister the share name and re-register that device with Tracker Live, but with a new share name

The share name is only needed when adding a GPS device to the app's Targets-list, and the GPS device's display name shown on map, can be edited as often as you want, directly from the GPS device's own "Settings" menu by tapping the first "Name" field in the list and saving a new display name.

If you have added this particular GPS device on Your Targets-list with a viewer password, you cannot unregister the GPS device and re-register it with Tracker Live

The following operation can only be performed by the owner of the GPS device or by someone who has added the GPS device to their Targets-list with the owner's password.

NOTE!
It is recommended that the GPS device you are deregistering is online and logged in to Tracker Live -service during the "Deregister" -procedure

- Open the app and tap the button in the lower right corner of the map view, or swipe from the right edge of the screen to the center of the map
- Tap "All targets" at the bottom of the side menu that opens
- Select the first tab "My devices" at the top of the menu view that opens
- Tap the name of that GPS device (not the icon, but the name) of which you would like to deregister
- The GPS device's own "Settings" menu opens
- From this menu, take note of the phone number used by the GPS device and the more specific type/model of the device
- The IMEI code of the device (starting with 35xxxx) can be found written on the GPS device's chassis (or on a sticker attached to it)
- When you have gathered all the required information, you can tap the 3dots-icon in the upper right corner of the item's "Settings" menu
- Select "Deregister", the consequences of this are described in more detail here (e.g. all saved Timeline data will get deleted)

Once these steps are done, the GPS device must be re-registered with Tracker Live with new share name
For more detailed instructions on the re-registration steps, see the "More information" -section below

Tracker Easy GPS devices: Tracker Supra Easy and Tracker G1000 Easy

- If you have a Tracker Easy GPS device, then when it is switched on, it will check with the data available, if there can be found some existing live registration on the Tracker's live server
- If the GPS device in question:

a) had its registration deleted before you switched power on and

b) the GPS device was not logged in to the Tracker Live -service when it was deregistered and

c) you did not create a new registration / share name before switching the GPS device on

- Then the GPS device automatically creates a new registration for the Tracker live service the next time it is swich it on

- The Wrong way: If, after this, you tap the Plus-sign in the Targets-menu and select "Register a new GPS device" using either the "Phone number" or "Barcode" option, you will receive an "Incorrect password" error message (because there already is an excisting registration in Tracker Live -service created automatically by the GPS device as part of its starting-up procedure in case if there is no excisting registration to be found)
- The Right way: If the original QR code of the Tracker Easy GPS device is still intact and readable (not smudged or otherwise damaged), you can open the Targets -menu, tap the Plus-sign and select "Tracker Easy" and add the collar to the Targets-list by using QR-code

- If the original QR code is smudged or otherwise damaged, then check the IMEI code of the device (serial number starting with 35xxxx) and the phone number of your device and either call Tracker techsupport or send a ticket and we will check the status of the live registration of that GPS device

If you want to avoid the new Tracker live registration to be automatically generated by Tracker Easy GPS device and want to instead register it with a share name of your choice, follow these steps:

- Do not switch on the Tracker Easy GPS device after unregistering it if you have not first re-registered it with the Tracker Live service with the new share name of your choice
- So, in summary: First switch off the GPS device, then unregister it from Tracker Live -service, then make a new registration with new share name and once you've completed these steps, only then switch power back on to the Tracker Easy GPS device

How to manually create a new Tracker Live -registration, before switching power back on to the GPS device:

- Open "Targets"-menu -> tap Plus-sign -> "Register a new GPS device" -> choose to register it with the Phone number -option -> then, when the registration suggests a share name, tap that field and enter the desired share name instead
- If the server does not have another 1: 1 similar share name, the proposed share name will be accepted and stored on the Tracker Live service.
- Note! The share name cannot contain commas or spaces, or special characters (hyphens and underscores are accepted)
- Do not switch power back on to the GPS device until this new Tracker Live -service registration with the new share name is successful and ok

- In case if you encounter unexpected problems, check the IMEI code of the device (serial number starting with 35xxxx) and the phone number of your device and either call Tracker techsupport or send a ticket and we will check the status of the live registration of that GPS device

Tracker GPS devices made in 2013 or later that are not Tracker Easy GPS devices:

- If you have a Tracker Easy GPS device, then when it is switched on, it will check with the data available, if there can be found some existing live registration on the Tracker's live server
- If the GPS device in question:

a) had its registration deleted before you switched power on and

b) the GPS device was not logged in to the Tracker Live -service when it was deregistered and

c) you did not create a new registration / share name before switching the GPS device on

- Then the GPS device automatically creates a new initial / preliminary Tracker Live -registation, which the user must complete, to make it work as intended

How user can complete the initial / preliminary Tracker Live -service registration, made by the device on its start-up:

- Open "Targets"-menu -> tap Plus-sign -> "Register a new GPS device" -> choose to register it with the Bar code -option -> then, when the registration suggests a share name, tap that field and enter the desired share name instead
- If the server does not have another 1: 1 similar share name, the proposed share name will be accepted and stored on the Tracker Live service.

- Note! The share name cannot contain commas or spaces, or special characters (hyphens and underscores are accepted)

- In case if you encounter unexpected problems, check the IMEI code of the device (serial number starting with 35xxxx) and the phone number of your device and either call Tracker techsupport or send a ticket and we will check the status of the live registration of that GPS device

Older Tracker GPS devices (made before 2013 and are not Tracker Easy GPS devices)

- Once the Tracker Live -registration for the GPS device has been deregistered as described above, you can proceed with the re-registering it as described in this Guide under "If the Tracker GPS device had been previously unregistered from Tracker Live -service" -> "In the case of a Tracker GPS device made before 2013"

- In case if you encounter unexpected problems, check the IMEI code of the device (serial number starting with 35xxxx) and the phone number of your device and either call Tracker techsupport or send a ticket and we will check the status of the live registration of that GPS device

NOTE!
In the case of a G500 series device or G400FI, then Tracker Technical can help and give assistance in problem situations, but in the case of the older G400 series GPS devices, their technical support has already expired and those devices are no longer serviced by Tracker service. For more information, see this announcement (TTA310 Series support and support services ended earlier, see this article for more information)
